Hammonton is a borough in Atlantic County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough’s population was 14,7911, an increase of 12.08% from its 2000 population of 13,164. Hammonton was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 27, 1866, from portions of Mullica Township and Hamilton Township. The town was named for John Hammond Coffin Jr., who settled here in 1783 and established a stagecoach stop on his property known as “The Blue Ball.” Coffin’s tavern became a well-known resting place for travelers between Philadelphia and New York City and was later run by his son Hammond. The borough is located in the southern part of Atlantic County, about 25 miles (40 km) east of Philadelphia and 15 miles (24 km) west of Atlantic City.
